"Wildwood", A short story by Rosalie Morales Kearns.
I'm still on a short story kick, sporadic as my reading is. All of them touching for that quality that's just beyond. Some leap far and some just about lay a finger on it. This one is about a boy and a fortune teller's booth, marking a change.
Side note: read a bit of Willa Cather's, Youth and the Bright Medusa, and the leap is beyond the moon. :)
